    Re: Zdz

Cory... the older ZDZ's used to have a routine to start them (5-5-1 method) but the newer ones (210, 160, 180, 112, 56) that I have played with all start like any other motor. The rotary valve gives them a very strong mid-range but if you don't setup the headers for the appropriate can or pipe, they will be peaky or flat just like anything else. They are smooth running, but again, no different than most other motors.

They do spit a bit of fuel out the carb, but nothing a little baffle can't manage.

And ZDZ is smart and don't make a big deal about their versions, LOL. I have seen 3 different versions of ZDZ180 and ZDZ90, but they remain tight-lipped about it so never a discussion about whether it is a V1, V2, or V3. The Chinese and Taiwanese should take a lesson there, LOL.

I just love the idea of a super smooth engine with as clean a mid-range as possible. I'd gladly give up some top end for a smooth engine with a clean mid-range and great transition.

I went to a stock exhaust on my Mamba/DA70 because I was having some transition issues with the can I had on it, now she spins a Falcon 24x9 carbon at 7350rpm all day long! The motor is awesome and transition is great, but that mid-range sounds nasty! But, point is, when it spun 6850rpm on the can it still had gobs of power...I would give up that extra top end to clean up the mid range in a heart beat. (This is not a bash on the 70 at all, I love this engine...smooth, idles awesome, stupid top end, etc...but it still runs like a two stroke with a Walbro carb!)

I actually figured out what was going on...didn't want to touch the timing because I though it would be good from DA. Today I gave it shot, it came fully advanced so I fully retarded it for the hell of it...smoothed the mid range right out and I picked up more on the top end. I'm getting 7500 static rpm when warm on a Falcon Carbon 24 x 9 now...just on muffs. It's also running a bit cooler. Is anyone getting that kind of power even with tuned pipes? I actually feel like I could use a bit more prop now...does the 25 x 8 wide load the engine a bit more than the 24 x 9?

Most look for that rpm on a pipe/25x8w.

    Definitely more load!

    Cool...sorry for derailing the thread!

How does the 3 blade work for slow stuff...I'm thinking less prop wash getting out to the ailerons? I also have some concern that the much smaller diameter of the 3 blade might not work well with a big round cowl?

You're probably correct on both points. I don't have much time on the 3 blade yet and it has been very windy so I didn't do very much low harrier flying but I don't hate it and it is even quieter. I was curious so it's a bit of an experiment, I also got a 27x12TH 3 blade to try on my GP123.

Well thanks for experimenting Paul...helps the rest of us out! Looks like props are going up in price, just checked TB for a 25x8w, almost $130, ouch!
