Like many here I think I have more .049 scars than any other size engine (vicious little buggers). LOL
After seeing some of the gory pics on the various forums I got to thinking how god awful right hand dominant I am and how totally screwed I would be if I got caught by even one of my 35cc gas jobs.
So. I took my old Hobico starter, chopped off the long curly lead, soldered on a deans connector and strapped on a 4s 2200mah lipo. That combination flips over 35cc engines with authority (largest gas I have tried so far). I'd rather have starter rings on the spinner than stitches or worse on me.
Don't know about the 60 cc that I am getting ready for the coming season so with that in mind I have ordered one of these chicken sticks as a back up. In my opinion anything that keeps those right hand digits attached and working as advertised is worth a try.

getting nicked by a 35cc, on another forum MACHZ used his hand to stop a 50cc engine.... not pretty....

You know, when I think back on the few hand/prop related injuries I had witnessed and experienced the vast majority have happened after the engine is running. And they are the worst! That I think is where the gory pictures come from.

Mervin, you are probably right and things like not securing the plane properly or trying to adjust a running engine all contribute (that's when those sweet little .049s turn especially vicious)
In my case, most of my close calls have come when I get frustrated with a balky engine and reach back in to flip the prop again before everything stops moving. A chicken stick sized for the larger engines will at least keep the tender digits back a bit. I'm sure even a piece of heater hose pressed on a chunk of dowel would work - these chicken sticks are just a more elegant solution.
I'll give it an honest try this summer and see how it goes. Worst case scenario - I blew $40.00 us on another hunk of rc related junk that I don't use. I've accumulated quite a bit of that over the years judging from the looks of my shop. LOL
