CARF Flash BF100 or IQ Hammer 170

So I've ordered a CARF Ultra flash Swiss Scheme with the recent sale. I had a Classic Flash a few years ago with a Merlin 160 and it was a beast! Seemed to do o.k with the power and fuel consumption but did have an issue with residual thrust

So with the new build, I have the choice of using my BF 100 (28lbs) or an IQ Hammer 170 (38 lbs). The BF is a lighter install by about a lb. I like flying time so want to get the most out of the wing and main tank.

I'm thinking that the IQ might give the better performance without any downside on fuel consumption as I'll be using less throttle which will bring the turbine down into its more efficient range.

    What's your vote and why?

    Cheers,

    PaulD

Absolutely no question, go with the 170, LOL.

Why... can never have enough power

Mine had a 140 in it and it would have only been better with a 170

I think it depends a lot on where you plan to fly it Paul. If its a nice big open area where you can use the speed and have some good approaches, the big power is awesome. On a small field where you can't really use the power and approaches aren't so good, it's nicer to keep it light.

I have a Classic with a JC Rabbit 100 in it that I use for my home field. I like it cause it still does about 180mph but, you can slow it down and get it on a 300 ft or less field.

BTW, the Flash is plenty fast with a BF100, Peter A used to fly one here and would do 225mph+. I don't know how much of a real speed gain you will get with the extra 10lbs thrust of the 170 cause once you hit that point it takes a huge increase in power to get a small speed gain.

Love the Swiss scheme, good luck with it!

    Mike

    I agree with Mike..

The BF100 sounds like plenty...And its nice to know you can fly at ANY field.

Being able to fly at any field is a major goal. I've got fields close to home I can easily get my Élan in and out of with the BF100 but not my Kingcat with the 170. They both use the same ECU and I have a spare with pump, valves etc. it's currently flashed with the 170 software but I can easily get that fixed to run the 100.

Gotta see if I can find some residual trust numbers to see if there's much of a difference.

Gotta agree with Mike B. on this one. I have seen his fly with the Rabbit and it does just fine.

Mine with a Cheetah (original 31lb thrust) is a blast to fly, but I am a chicken to take it to a smaller field. Just me, the plane is fine for it.

The BF 100 would be a real nice general setup with still plenty of speed and let you go to tighter landing/take-off areas. Remember..........the Ultra is a little faster than your Classic.

My goodness. Too many voices of reason here, LOL

If I did it again, I would throw a Hybl 165 in a Carf UFlash! Good price, nice light turbine minimal residual thrust and easy on fuel for general flying.

I'm surprised you didn't stuff a Behotec 220 in yours Trevor!!

Ali had an Ultra Flash at Wingham last year that originally had a KT 210 in it and said it was not a good setup. He sold that same plane to some lucky devil with a Jetcat P140RX while we were at Wingham. When we were chatting later in the evenings he had commented about that particular plane being the best Ultra Flash he had ever flown. Seems that a 140 is about the perfect match for an Ultra Flash. Of course there is always a good argument for more power!

Paul you should sell your 100 to me and buy a 140.

Not a bad idea. My 100 is in getting new bearings so it will be fresh when I get it back. Just over 25 hrs before the bearings needed doing - expected a lot more but they said I had FOD go thru the engine - always run a FOD screen so WTF?

    Cheers,
