Re: FAA Announces NEW Rules for MODEL Aircraft Registration Process

Guys - it is questionable whether the FAA has the legal authority to make regulations with respect to model aircraft flown for recreational purposes, however we will set that aside and let the lawyers battle that one out.

Based on what my US contacts are telling me I will try to state the info as I understand it. Granted some is clear as mud at the moment, however, as a Canadian you are a foreign national with respect to these rules and if you are going to fly in the US, it presently appears you will be required to apply through the process. However you will not be "registered" as you are not a US resident. Foreign nationals will be required to pay $5 and receive a certificate. The $5 is refundable through the FAA for foreign nationals. It is not entirely clear whether we will be assigned an identifier but supposing we are then that will have to be affixed to the airplane, heli, quad etc. A the moment there does not appear to be a process for foreign nationals to apply. So I think we will just have to wait in the wings and see how this evolves. And to be sure it applies to all UAS i.e. planes, helis, quads etc between 250 g (.55 lbs) and 55 lbs. Hopefully the mechanisms will be clearer over the coming weeks.

Sorry Doug you are incorrect. All aircraft must be registered. Go to Flying Giants and read the whole damn thing. It's a mess!!!

Agree that it ALL things that fly & weigh more than 250 grams & have a form of control system, as in radio control or even control line.

Re: FAA Announces NEW Rules for MODEL Aircraft Registration Process

This is the link to the current Q & A FAQ & it clearly states ONLY US citizens can apply right now but they will (as I interpret it) expect us to register if we expect to fly in the US.
