I totally agree...my EME is great and I suspect it could be better with a Walbro carb.
I do see the potential in this DA though, on my initial run the throttle response and mid range was almost like an electric motor. Some combination of cutting the exhaust tips and putting on the cowl has messed it up. I have some hope that it will get better with time and will update this thread accordingly.

I have had 3 EME engines without issue. I would not hesitate to buy another. I am sure your DA just needs some run time or possibly a Walbro carb will sort it out. It just sucks to spend more money on a better carb when the DA already costs a premium.

I have fondle 2 EME's- 35cc and a 60cc, then stayed at a super 8 once.

It has a Walbro carb, it is my EME that doesn't.
I'm starting to become pretty discouraged, feeling like I just threw away a good chunk of change.
Ran two more tanks through it today. Opened the top of the motor box and got a fresh can of gas. Fired up good...5 minutes or so of running on the ground, good idle, good transition, 7150rpm on the top end. Flew awesome for about 10 minutes, was about ready to throw a party, then it all went to crap. Went to give it some throttle and heard the rpm drop, reduced throttle until it picked up and landed it normally. Richened the high a bit, did nothing, richened the low a bit and lost a bit of top end and had to trim up the idle. Ran good on the ground again, flew for a minute or two and dead stick...same symptoms like it was leaning out again. Put it down in the oat field and luckily no damage.
Frustrated as all hell, I started fresh with DA's needle settings, did just enough tuning to get a reliable idle but had to open the high speed about a quarter turn more than their starting to point to stop it from leaning out on the top end. Flew it for a few minutes then it went to crap again and landed it. Starting to think there is an ignition problem or something so I took the jumpers off my TechAero IBEC and let all 6.6v go to the ignition since it is high voltage anyway. Pulled the plug and changed it and put a zip tie around the plug cap to make sure it was tight. Ran it on ground, same crap, richened everything some more and flew again. Few minutes later same crap. Land, richen low end about 1/16 of a turn and suddenly it is running like a top, although lots of burble and lots of trim because it is mega rich on the low end. Fly the rest of the tank through, 7 minutes or so, and no issue. Land it, run it some more at the hold backs and no leaning or anything.
Can this thing really be this fickle??? I had no idea what the heck I was getting into when I got my little EME and yet I flew at factory settings without issue, minor tuning for top end as it broke in and finally tuned the low end to get the best idle and mid range I could. Never once have I had a dead stick. Starting to wish I bought two new EMEs. Did I mention the slop in the wrist pin/connecting rod was worse from brand new in the DA than in my 50 flight EME??? What the hell did I pay the big bucks for???
First thing I would've done is get in contact with DA about your plug boot. It's definitely not right. I would say that and/or your ignition is ****ed.
I'm sure they'll take care of you just like all the others!

No such a thing as run in time. Tune them like they should be tuned and fly the he!! Out of them.
Never babied or run a gas engine rich in my life....both are a complete waste of time on a gas engine.....JMHO of course and I have never looked back![]()

Cory, I agree, could be ignition. A friend had a bad da ignition and it made the servos jump around on the ibec just like yours did. It quit working all together several flights later.
The other thing I would try is lean the bottom end a little and then start with the top end rich for sure. (richen h needle 3/4 turn).
The top end sounds like it might be lean but who knows. Remember as the engine warms up you will loose some rpm so wait until it is warm before you start tuning for max rpm from this rich state.
