It is just possible that your mileage may not improve dramatically dropping the speed back. Best fuel economy will come somewhere close to max torque peak. Above or below torque peak, motor will actually work harder to maintain its speed. All the new engines run at higher rpms now to achieve their HP ratings, and toque rpm goes up with it.
My old Dodge 318 (5.4) had 330ftlb/t at 2400 rpm, hp was rated at 225. The new 4.7 has 310ftlb/t at 3600rpm but is rated as 270hp.
The 318 did 24mpg empty and 18 pulling 3600lbs, the new 4.7 would have to shift back 3-4 gears in its 9 speed to get rev close to 3600 to pull, and will not deliver decent gas mileage, except downhill. this is where the small diesel shines. caribou

I always assumed the newer vehicles got less mileage because of the HP increases to over 300+ (I thin one model is 350HP) and the engine displacement got bigger, 5.9 up to 6.6litres.
The ever increasing rush to make everything bigger and faster, even tho you can't use it 90% of the time. They've go these trucks hauling loads now that should be behind Freightliners, not vehicles classified as pickups.
One thing I might mention, air filters, on my truck they where super restrictive and mileage would suffer in as little as 7-8k. I replaced the stock unit with a K&N, mileage stayed normal thru 25K, clean it, go again. caribou
But you NEEEED more horsepower than your buddy so you can pass him towing your trailer up a hill.... right?

There is no question that more horsepower = more fuel. I believe that the major contributor however to the bigger diesels is all the emissions crap that the OEMS are stuffing onto the trucks to keep EPA happy. Its kinda similar to the shit that happened to the gas engines in the 80's when they got all choked up with shitty fuel injection systems with massive amounts of EGR.

I have a 6.4L Ford that I use to tow a 33' 5th wheel. Last year I had a shop remove all the after-treatment crap and install an H&S tuner to re-calibrate the fuel curves. I still don't get any visible smoke unless I crank the power setting up to "Insane" and tend to run it at the stock power setting as my real goal was to improve my towing economy. I used to burn thru an entire tank of fuel running the mountains up to the Princeton Jet rally, now when I get there I almost have enough fuel to get back home. Huge difference and my truck is about 100 obs lighter as well from all the crap that came out.

My old Equinox towing my 6X12 V is getting about 14mpg. Have to lock it out of OD so tooling down the highway at 110 turning right around 3000. It doesn't seem to mind at all but my wallet wasn't pleased. LOL
