Oops, guess I'm a fan boy, sorry Ed.
Want a beater system, get an old JR9505 or 9305 with a 921rx. Bullet proof.

But since you asked..........
YOU of ALL people should no this hobby is not always about NEED and is more often about WANT.
I started flying RC in 1972 and have had many radios in the last 45+ years including ORBIT, Heathkit, Kraft, Royal, Isotronics, Airtronics, Futaba, JR and Spektrum.
Yes the JETI DS16 is already probably more radio then I NEED but when I bought it I had gone from a DX7 to a JR 9303 then I was at Joe Nall and was told if I like my plane I better get the 9503 so bought that in May and then 2 months later bought the JETI DS16 NOT because I actually NEEDED to but because I WANTED TO, I convinced myself that the WANT actual was NEED.
Now after having the DS16 the same thing occurred with the DS24 and WANT became NEED but it does have some real cool features like feeback on the sticks, Hall Sensors instead of potentiometers on the stcks, sticks that you can cant back and to either side to recenter the stick for a better feal, voice recording for switch assignment, assign swiches, swap out kind of switch, two additional rotary and 2 additional slide switches, colour display, 3 built in TX antennas, a display that is mounted up at the top of the TX where you can see it easier without tilting your head down as much, all metal case.
Additionally I am a "PINCHER" so I use my Thumb & For Finger to grab the sticks and the Tx is thin enough that I can hold it between my pinky and middle finger comfortably so I don;t NEED to use a neck strap which is The KEY Factor for me.
I will admit that only after I bought the DS24 did I notice the display is smaller than the DS16. I'll post the measurements tonight.
