    Hostetler 30% Chipmunk

OK so seeing as I have finished my 1/3 Stearman I might as well get a start on my 113" super chipmunk . I will be using the Valach 120 boxer twin for power .. was not planing on starting the kit until this fall but seeing as it won't stop snowing up here I might as well make use of my time . This is one massive box of wood that builds a massive Chipmunk . The kit was cut by National Balsa and while the wood looks very good I don't think they know what a lightening hole is, all the parts are just big slabs . First thing is to lay out the sides and mark out the lightening holes and cut them out with the router . The sides are 3 layers thick for 1/2 the length of the plane so this alone will save a ton of weight ..

Very nice Roger! I have always liked Chipmunk's. Are you planning to use the Art Scholl scheme?

Hi Paul , purchased the super chipmunk cowl and the Art Scholl tail . The Canadian military version is my favorite but figure it will fly better with the larger tail ..will drop the flaps and go full ailerons too..

Yeah the Goldberg chip was one of the greats, still have one kicking around I'll give to my kid . Did manage to cut the lightening holes last night . Wow 12 oz savings on just a few parts , now time to laminate and start the framing . The way the weathers going I may just get this 1/2 finished LOL.

    Re: Hostetler 30% Chipmunk

Spent a few hrs on the weekend, Lots of room for creative thought on this one . The plans are more like paint by number , would have been great if they used some measurements when drawing the plans . Bit of a pain having to measure the drawings with 1/8" thick lines just to find out they don't jive with the supplied parts LOL. The plan is more of a outline of a plane and you do the rest ..

That must be frustrating...You got to wonder why they go through the trouble to make a kit and draw plans if they're not accurate?
