Sounds like a missed out on a fun day. (again) I really wished I had witnessed this first hand. But I keep asking myself, "Why did this happen?" Bob is a fantastic pilot and always maintains complete control of his aircraft. His maneuvers are always well thought out and executed with surgical type precision. Trevor's building skills are second to none, there is no doubt about that. So how do we explain the tragic incident that caused the damage to Ed's brand new airplane that was equipped with nothing but the best components and technology?
I've collected multiple accounts of the incident that day, put them all together and consulted with experts from NASA*, The Weather Network**, and even asked Siri***. This, without a doubt, is what happened. DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME.
Everyone knows our clocks went ahead last weekend. So what does this have to do with anything? In order for the time to change, the earth must pivot on it's polar axis and temporarily change rotational speed. This happens in small increments over the course of the weekend, interfering with the operation of regular gyros. When these shifts occur, GPS satellites must change position and re-calibrate in order to continue transmitting accurate GPS signals. This would have wreaked havoc on GPS assisted gyros.
The earth's shift in position and inconsistent/inaccurate GPS signal combined to make Bob's final approach impossible. This is the only plausible explanation. (see picture)
* didn't actually talk to NASA
** used the app, weather seemed good
