Hate to say it guys... but it's coming. I'm already starting to look forward to next years new planes and re-maidens.
I won't likely get as much done as I hope to, I never do, but my tentative list of winter projects are (in order of importance to me)...
-A Rascal 110 sitting in the box
-Finish a diet/re-cover/e-power of a first gen 33% Aeroworks Edge 540 T
-Rebuild the canopy on my Lanier 1/3 Extra (not sure how far I'll go with this one, it could really use a cosmetic overhaul)
-Stem to Stern doing the usual necessary ARF improvements on a Great Planes PT-17, second hand but never fueled/flown
What's on your bench with a projected spring completion date?

Maybe, maybe, maybe finally get to finish my Great Planes F14 Tomcat....have been picking away at it for years now.
Also have a P51 to finish up in a German scheme. Also need to go through every plane from stem to stern again in prep for next years season.
Nothing major but would like the above projects completed finally.

I have a 2M Badan Vertigo enroute...will be brushless powered and hopefully ready for a Spring maiden.
I also have an older ESM Spitfire in need of an engine that I'd like to fly next season.
Of course, everything else needs a once over/refreshing.

I think I'll copy Dan...Hacker A60-18L on 12s. Not sure about ESC yet...not a huge fan of Castle, the ZTW Gecko ESCs seem to be a decent budget ESC, or I may splurge for a Jeti or something similar quality. I've had great luck with Hobbywing and have two of their air ESCs now...but $450USD for their HV 160A ESC is a bit rich for my blood.
I really don't understand the Hacker specs...their website shows 2600W for the A60-18L but people running them seem to be getting close to twice that reliably. I figure my Vertigo to be close in the 15 - 16lb range, so quite a bit lighter than most 50cc ARFs. I don't think it should need the Q80 which seems to be the power system for most people in a 50 - 60cc 3D bird. There are also the Rimfire motors and some decent looking Turnigy ones, but those and the Q80 are all much heavier than the A60...I'm trying to keep this thing as light as possible, as long as it can be done reliably with enough power to punch out of a hover.
Do you have any other ideas?

I think you're on the right track, I've had trouble a with castle HV 160 but they did stand behind it and replace... Hobbyking controllers, in my experience, are great as long as you use them to about 80% of rated capacity or so. Using them to their full rating tends to let the smoke out and it seems like the bigger they are the truer that has been for me... Having said that I've got a YEP 180 here that I'm going to try next and I'll probably use it hard and see how long it lasts, I'm a slow learner.
12s will be lots for you, I've flown 100cc planes that would hover on 12s.
I can't comment about hacker motors beyond saying everyone seems to say they can handle much more than they're rated for. I bought my first hacker from Lorne a couple years ago for this Edge project and its still sitting on the shelf. I don't even remember what motor it is, only that I had it figured at the time that it should handle all the power I need and work about right with a Mejz 26x15E on 14s.
You might want to consider Plettenburg and Shulze product... I haven't used mine enough to be able to give them a genuine recommendation but I think I'm going to be happy long term... nice software on the speed control, but it's a little tricky to get it running.
