Re: The official Riff-Raff thread (never ending engine thread, East/West)

For those that didn't see on the other thread, about a week and a half ago I had a low hover dead stick to nose dive crash with my Mamba. When I retrieved it, the entire spinner was in the ground and the fuse was in a few pieces.

Here's a little update...I know lots of folks looked at the before pictures I posted on the Raven thread and commented that it wasn't worth fixing. However, upon closer inspection I noticed that a lot of the glue joints had simply separated and a lot of the wood delaminated rather than actually breaking. So, after lots of gluing, clamping, sanding and coming up with anyway I could to restructure it, I thought I was time for an update. At current, the cabanes are straightened, their mounts are re-structured and the motor box/gear block has all been re-structured as a unit. That big motor box/gear block unit sort of snaps into the fuse with most of the support coming from the ply fuse sides...believe it or not. As it sits in the photo the main thing left to do is gluing that motor box/gear block structure back to the fuse. Just some minor reinforcing and prettying up after that.

I'm going to motivate it this time with a GP61...I loved the last one I had and I think the packaging of a single in this airframe is going to be much easier. I was having trouble with cooling my DA70, even though I know others didn't, but I'm looking forward to the simplicity of a single on this one now that it's going to be a beater. I hope to find a new more deserving home for my DA70 when it comes home from it's vacation in Arizona.

Anyway, here are some before and after shots...first 4 are before, last 4 are after. Might not be obvious in the photos, but I'm quite certain it will be stronger than it was originally when I'm done...no concerns about the engine flying off the front of the fuse! Yes it will be ugly, but they seem to be more fun to fly the worse they look!

Thanks. Should be next week at some point...but I get busy with work starting Thursday through the weekend. Engine is supposed to be here Tuesday. I'm not much of one for maiden fanfare...usually just go out and fly by myself...lol.

Just concocting a strategy for the last big glue job...quite a few joints being re-made. I'm hoping a ratchet strap makes a good clamp around the fuse and F1 former joint maybe a second one around the second former. Should be fun!

The black one was a Legend AL 7x19 with 6’6” height and 3ft v-nose. Awesome trailer. Bob has it now.

Just picked up a Discovery 7x23 AL Sled trailer with 6’6” height and 5ft v-nose. Doesn’t really pull any different but really like the front ramp door on the front V

I highly recommend torsion if you get a trailer... plane saver. So smooth

Thanks Trev. I have a new steel trailer and just not in love with it, looking to swap it out for aluminum. Was thinking of going 8x18 plus v-nose so I can have 1- 40%er and 1-35%er side by side with stabs on, well side by side but nose to tail and also I'd like to leave the wings on my warbird and 7x" electrics on middle shelf. I hate setting up planes and would rather just pull them out.

And yes torsion for the win, totally agree thanks again
