    Flying into heavy fog

So , today at 5 am I woke up to a beautiful sunny morning with zero wind. I quickly fueled and fired up my 1/3 scale Super Cub and taxied to the runway. Just at that moment I noticed that my tail wheel was running a skewed , so I spent about 5 minutes dinking with that while the 120 comfortably sat ideling. No biggy! Then I quickly did my throttle runup a couple times and took off to the northwest. Holy Crap. The plane vanished into the fog. I made my first turn to the east and got ready for the down wind leg. Where the hell is it? I can hear it- - - but where the hell is it? I hit the ignition kill switch and went to neutral controls. After what seemed to be an eternity, I heard a faint - crunch! That didnt sound that bad, maybe Im going to be lucky; but where did that fog come from so quickly? It was clear little more than 5 minutes ago! After pushing crop stands of 3 feet, and 3 changes of pants ( the crop was soaking wet with dew), I finally decided to climb one of my taller hopper grain bins with a set of binoculars and spent 10 minutes on my perch( see picture ). No luck, nothing could be seen. After lunch I remembered something about a receiver signal strength meter on my 10 channel flysky transmitter . I walked out to the runway , turned the transmitter on and instantly had a signal strength of -92 decibels. After about an hour of more walking and searching the best direction to walk to maintain a signal strength reading I found my plane , hardly even damaged!- - - NOT.( See picture) . Oh well, back to the hobby bench this winter.Motor seems fine, servos and radios are working , fuel and smoke tanks and ignition are all intact, so Ill just be buying another 1/3?scale World Models Super Cub . Lesson learned- - Always look up and check the skys before you start your take off run. The FOG might be comin to get ya!

    Re: Flying into heavy fog

    Great news Orval!

Can't let a toy or a little fog get a guy down!

Glad everything else survived the wreck.

Bout 3 weeks ago I flew through a small fog cloud....say 5 sec max....very unnerving ordeal.. aaaaaaaand I knew it was there!!!!

    Re: Flying into heavy fog

Yup for sure! Sh. t happens. Never seen fog move in over our hill that fast since we bought the place in 1974. But I guess I should have suspected it cause the crop was soaking wet with dew and the morning air was heating up very quickly. Addiction to dope, crack, booze or sex , sooner or later makes you stupid. My addiction is giant scale Rc airplanes . Nuff said.
