My sister owned a VW TDI and got almost 55 mpg on the Hiway. She got rid of it after about 100,000km after hearing about the down the road maintenance costs of the diesel after 150000km Not sure what they were but scared her enough to get rid of it..

I've owed 3 Jetta's in the past and now own a Ford Fusion. Let me tell ya I should have stuck with my Jetta's!! Im not happy with a Ford Trev!! 6 drive shafts later and the paint is falling off the body (not rusting just simply falling off) and they won't do anything about it.
The Jetta will easily handle 700 lbs. And the new clean diesel is capable of getting 1400km to a 60 liter tank. Maintenance can be expensive if you let it get away. But that goes for any vehicle

Thanks guys.. Brad, great response! I did some searching yesterday and it turns out they have a Hybrid Jetta that gets even better milage than the diesel at 4.5L to 100klm real road test. $23,000 for a 2013 with 25,000lkm
I think Im pretty sure it will be a Jetta. Either a diesel or a Hybrid. They look pretty good these days. Theyve been around a long time, and they reputation is pretty solid. Not rushing out today.. but maybe over the summer.
Then my username will be Jettster..Oh yeah!!!![]()

Trev, lol! Vdubs are great for deisel fuel economy, and they can tow! I'm just not a fan of working on them. (deisels or Vdubs, lol) My AWD Skyactiv CX-5 will get close to 800k on a 55 litre tank if it's all highway and I use the cruise. It's towing capacity is 2000lbs. The FWD ones are better on fuel. Mazda will soon have their Skyactiv deisel in the Mazda 6, so that may be another choice, but it's new, unproven technology.
If you choose deisel, I'd stick with the Vdub.

Hey Trevor!
We have two 2004 Jettas here and we log every tank of fuel. 55 to 57mpg at regular highway speeds and 60 t0 62mpg if you cut the speed back to 90kmph. That is all highway driving though as there are no cities out here! Both are standard transmissions and we have towed a small tent trailer with a canoe on the trailer and another on the roof rack, two adults and two teens with all camping gear and we hit an all time mileage low of 48mpg at 110kmph! We have had the sedan the longest - 75,000km on it when we bought it, there is 430,000 on it now and we don't have any reason to get rid of it yet.
Maintenance wise, timing belts every 160,000km($1000 with new water pump and idler pully) new back brakes at about 310,000km (gravel road damage), new clutch at 390,000. We got new glow plugs on warranty and have only changed them once since at $75 each, other than that it's just tires, fuel and oil changes. We try to change the oil every 5000km and it uses about 1/2 to 3/4 of a liter of oil between changes.
We were running a Chev 1/2 ton 2WD at 20mpg before we bought the Jetta and spending $600/month on fuel. The $600/month covered the Jetta payments AND the fuel!
I know a fellow out here with a new Dodge Ecodiesel, he loves it and is getting about 25 to 27mpg. It's still pretty new though so the jury is out on maintenance costs. Our 2003 Dodge Cummins gets a good solid 18mpg empty or 16.7 loaded!
Hope that helps! Merv
