A Resurrection of The Original BBT - Aerotech 107" Yak 54

I'm Resurrecting the first Giant Scale Aerobatic Airframe Trev built almost 10 years ago.

It's a 107" Aerotech Yak 54 built from a Kit. It was Trev's First BBT and he finished it in QQ's Yak 54 Scheme.
Was powered by a DA85 on a KS Tuned Pipe. He had it for a while then I traded him a 35% Carden Edge for it and he refinished it in my favorite Yak 54 scheme, The Group Tranchant Aerobatic Team.

Trev wanted to keep the DA85/Pipe combo so I put in a DA100L on DA mufflers. With this combo I thought I was around 30 lbs but measured it and she was 33lbs. Big Wing Area made her a floater and while the DA100L wouldn't win any drag races it still had unlimited vertical and if you didn't back-off the throttle it would climb out of site, on a 3 Blade

I flew it in IMAC in the Sportsman Class and was at a Contest in Ottawa when I planted it in a Snow Fence.
Hit one of the "T-Bar" posts that bit into the right wing panel right up to the Wing Tube, Hacked up the cowl and the prop was toast.

I don't like rebuilding so I sold it that Fall at the London Swap Meet to maddog. He rebuilt it and Sold it to 4REDave.
3 years ago I was at the London Swap Meet and bought it back from 4REDave. It had a Mintor 110 on cans in it and a mix of servos.
I pulled all that out and sold it. I was going to put a DA 100L on Plane Bender Cans. Then changed to a 3w110CS but finally decided on a DA120 on Plane Bender Pipes.

Below is a photo of when it was in the QQ Scheme and some photos of what it is looking like now in the Group Tranchant scheme

    Ya Rick,

The Group Tranchant scheme is my favorite Yak 54 scheme.

They were a 4 Women Aerobatic Team that just did airshows and stuff in Europe. Group Tranchant is or was a big European Casino Conglomerate.

Beautiful Yak! I never realized how big the Yak 54 were till I close to one. They are big planes.

Re: A Resurrection of The Original BBT - Aerotech 107" Yak 54

Last time I had the plane Rudder was on pull-pull with tandem servos.

I prefer the direct drive with the servo in the tail.

I decided to change to direct dive and had worked on it last year but the tail was twisting from the insane toque of the servo.

I installed some 1/8" Aircraft Plywood plates with cut outs for the MKS Servo and installed some 1/4" x 1/4" braces from fuse side to fuse side to help stiffen everything up. Hysol was used of course! LOL

Got a little more work done on her today.

Remounted the DA120 was it was sticking out way to far.

Also had to rework the throttle as the factory setting would have the push-rod hole through the firewall too close to one of the engine mounting bolts. This resulted in having to also add another choke arm on the opposite side of the carb so as not to interfere with the new throttle arm.

Re: A Resurrection of The Original BBT - Aerotech 107" Yak 54

I was off this week but had a HUGE Honey-Do-List to tackle.

I managed to squeeze in some time and work on the Yak.

When last we visited I had mounted the DA120 using a Blazing Star mount but it put the Engine to far forward.

I removed the mount and laminated another 1/4" piece of good quality 7 layer Aircraft Plywood and a 2mm piece of CF Plate on top of that.
I also did the same on the back of the firewall as it had been previously cut out for the Carb of a DA85 and I just wanted a better surface for the washers and nut to sit on.

I had also previously added a plastic servo arm to the throttle arm on the carb of the DA120. I wasn't happy with it so I bought a nice shiny Red Futaba Al arm and swapped it out.

    Next is programming a Jeti CB200 and 3 x R3 Receivers.
