    RCAF Fouga Magister

After 22 years of Liberal rule in Canada, John G Diefenbaker and his progressive Conservative party toook over in the late 50ís. It was Johnís idea to adopt a 2 seat jet trainer for Canada that would be based on a glider design as an economical cost-saving election promise. Enter the French design Fouga Magister. So successful this acquisition that while primarily used as a trainer aircraft it also saw some use in combat for close air support for the RCAF.

Just kidding. The RCAF never used the Fouga Magister. But nonetheless i thought it would look cool in a CAF scheme. I picked up a used Fouga ARF in 1:4.5 scale and despite already flying i wasnít wild about the original Israeli scheme so last month i put a new (fantasy) paint scheme on it.

Here are a few pics. The goal to was to paint the model in a convincing metal finish that looks slightly worn and weathered, as if it really could have been used by the RCAF.

And some close ups. If anyone is interested I can share some of the steps to get to this result.

And some humor. The one nice thing about doing a fantasy scheme is that you can make it look however you want. And as long as i didnít out the vents on the bottom and drains on the top i felt pretty comfortable using some artistic license. Lol.

    Sean,
You had me wanting to know your weathering secret after the first picture. Please share your secrets. I have a fantasy scheme I want to do on a scale plane and this technique is exactly what I was looking for..

I really like the finish on it but do yourself a big favour & NEVER let me use that garage. There isn't any work area I've worked in (other than a white room I did some QC work in relating to the space program in the late 60's) that is that clean. I can't even keep a white shirt clean for 10 minutes.

    Re: RCAF Fouga Magister

Thanks Guys! Larry and Trevor, the garage is new (had it built this year), and we are now using it for cars so it will never looks as clean as it does in the photos. Lol.

Dave, the weathering is done for the most part with artist oils and mineral spirits. You wipe on the artist oil (right out of the tube) then wipe it off with the mineral spirits on a clean paper towel. On fuse and fin i wipe top to bottom vertically and on the wings and stabs i wipe from to back. For individual streaks (like at panels or hinges, etc) i add a drop of oil with a small brush or toothpick, then wipe that back/down. Coming out of a panel i will put a piece of tape at the edge of the panel, add some oil on top of the tape then wipe it off of the tape on to the model. Removing the tape makes it look like the steak is coming out of the panel.
