ZDZ 97 experiment over 112 inbound!

So to start off this is not a bash ZDZ thread, loved everything about the dealer and motor but one thing.......more on that but here's the quickish story and ya ya I know a bunch of you guys told me not to do this but hey I'm stuborn so what!!!

Was going to build my dream floater, EF Slick 580 with a smooth running(ish) single, first I picked up A GP 88 Evo from lorne but it had a flaw in the head and I didn't like how it was fitting on the firewall so back it went, the I ordered the ZDZ 90 but uh oh in the box was a 97 by mistake. their updated more better in everyway version of the 90 so I talked myself into trying it..... This thing has some serious power I tell you but no matter what we tried tuning wise we could not get this thing to run even remotely smooth. It was a very difficult motor to tune and finding any type of transition was hard, very sensitive needles to say the least. Played with timing a lot, lipo straight to ignition bypassing ibec etc etc. I think Jason at ZDZ thought I was nuts, so I sent the motor to him and he ran it, his report to me was" something is definelty out of balance with this motor and we are sorry for all of your hassle" So in the end I am getting a 112 from them as a repacement an he will personally run that motor before it leaves his shop.

I still think that if I had gotten the 90 I had wanted then I would have been a lot happier but in the end this has been an expensive experiment, I'll need a new cowl and have to fix my firewall to accept the 112 as the mounting pattern is way different, infact the bottom right mounting hole for the 112 right now is not even there as the big single needed a huge cut out for the carb.....fun fun but a little winter project and I'll have the slick running again.

    Flame suit on.......haha

I guess either of those comapnies could send out a lemon but I'll hold my final judgment on ZDZ until after I've ran the 112 in this plane.....

Had a ZDZ-100ng..put over 300 flights on it, never a problem. Sold with the plane and ran great for the new owner.....I just find the service for these other engines is basically non-existent! If Jason at ZDZ takes care of you that's great as ZDZ Czech won't!!

Not many 112's out there but the ones that are around are fantastic....never been a fan of the large singles though! Actually any single!!!

The 112 will serve you great!

I hear ya on all that, so far he has been great. Ultimately I was planning a ZDZ 180 in my future 40%er but I'll liklely pass on that and go DA 150L on pipes or GP 176 EVO.
This 112 will likely be my only ZDZ and one of 3 100cc class motor I will own so it's not like I won't have options.

Dean.. I have a DA150L that has about 15-20 flights on it that I will be selling soon.

As for the 112, it is a sweet sweet motor! Not a powerhouse like a GP123 or DA120 but so smooth and reliable and hauls around John’s 32lb Pilot 330sc with authority!

John has 2 of them here with a crazy amount of gas through them and i’ve seen 2 others at local Funflys.

Nothing special about the big singles... almost similar weight as a twin, not the power and not near the smoothness. Glad you have gone to the twin.

Rodger that, I'm not right there for the 40%er yet. I was able to keep this plane pretty light with that single and the ZDZ guys says that something is out of balance with the motor and it's not as it should be. Regardless I do enjoy all my other twins and I was just experimenting, as we all do!!! Can't wait to get the 112 going and more so I am really looking forward to the slick next spring.

Will DA 100 headers fit the 112?

Dean, the DA 100 bolt spacing is identical, can't remember if the port is absolutely identical but I have used them without issue.
