Re: Atomizing Smoke Oil Injection Nozzles, header no-weld kits, & turbine smoke tubes

    Crankcase, new smoker here!

I am going to use your nozzles just not sure where to put it. Should I put it in the exhaust flange or should it go into the pipe? The pipe would be tight as there is no straight run and the only place I can see is where the blue arrow points to. The red X is where I would put it in the flange pointing down stream. Which would be better?

Also what size tank should I use for a 60cc plane? For lets say 5 minutes of smoke?

    Thanks,
    Rick

Re: Atomizing Smoke Oil Injection Nozzles, header no-weld kits, & turbine smoke tubes

Hey Rick, the red "X" on the flange is too close to the cylinder. Ideally we want to be about 1" to 1.5" down from the flange. In that area you have the option of pointing upstream or downstream. If your pointing upstream, test your pump with water with the header removed when your setting up the nozzle depth. Meaning that there is fine adjustment as the entire nozzle can be threaded further into the muffler or back it out for some fine tuning of where the spray lands. What we don't want to do is get a full spray up and out of the muffler at the flange if your directing upstream. That would be spraying right into the cylinder when installed and that's no good. A little misting out the muffler flange is ok, just not full force spray.

I don't see your invoice off hand so I'm not sure if you snagged your nozzle from a buddy, and have a no weld kit available for your nozzle. but for installation on the header the no-weld kit is an option that works great. For the secondary location, the blue dot area in question. Were you planning on brazing a nut and installing? Otherwise a no weld kit just a little upstream of the braze seam is good too.

Smoke time per tank can vary so it depends on your flying style and or throttle management. Estimate 3oz to 4oz per minute at WOT. I would start with a 16oz for starters. I have one guy getting 14-16 min from twin nozzles on a 170cc. Smoke comes on at takeoff and stays on till it's run out. So 2.5oz to 2.8oz per nozzle and it is dense Smoke!

    Here's a no weld installed on a 1" header. GP61.

Re: Atomizing Smoke Oil Injection Nozzles, header no-weld kits, & turbine smoke tubes

    More no-weld kit details:

The no weld kit consists of all stainless steel components. Several sizes available and I can build dies upon request in about 2 weeks. Right now we have the following sizes as measured by your header OD pipe size. 14mm, 20mm, 20mm Keleo ring, 22mm, 24mm-28mm.

The contoured nut is placed on the outside of the header pipe to find a spot where the curvature closely matches. It works on straight or curved sections. (When installed the contoured nut is on the inside of the header)
Once you find the spot, mark the location with a thin marker and drill a hole.

Insert the contoured nut, or fish it in place using a string.

Grab the nut with your fingernail and then install the contoured spacer with the curved side against the header pipe. Then the lockwasher and nut. If you use a scrap of yellow gas line and temporarily install it on the nozzle & mark it with a marker you can keep track of the spray direction.

No-weld kits work with headers of varous thickness. Anywhere from zero wall thickness up to over 1mm wall thickness.

Re: Atomizing Smoke Oil Injection Nozzles, header no-weld kits, & turbine smoke tubes

No I do not have the nozzle yet, I was not to sure what I needed to do this so I asked. I can do the no weld kit, it looks like the way to go. And I will put it into the curved part of the header. I first have to take the cowl off again to measure the OD of my header.
I will place an order shortly with you. I will get back to you via a PM.

    Thanks!
