I've started working on the Ailerons - I need to layout the Ailerons in order to make sure the fit is correct with the Flaps/Dive Brakes and the center of the wing.

I CNC'd the bottom of the Aileron - including marking the location of each rib.

I also realized that I needed to add the wing tips to each wing panel in order to make sure that the Aileron is positioned correctly.

The wing tips are made from 2 pieces of laminated balsa block. I CNC's the balsa block and glued the blocks together.

I then glued the wing tips onto each wing panel.

With the wing tips, in place - back to the Ailerons.

Added the ribs (which are CNC'd from TBolt Composite Foam board) brass rod hinge point and CBA Strap Hinges

Hinges were aligned with the plans and blocks were added to secure the hinges.

This guy showed up - he'll be the pilot for the Helldiver. Unfortunately, he has assumed a "project manager" role for this build, and he has been constantly on my back to get this plane done since he arrived!

I also ordered a Japanese Zero pilot for my Ziroli Zero (I'll be doing a finishing thread on that in the next couple of months). The Japanese pilot was here yesterday, but I seem to have misplaced him. When I find him, I will get a pic of him as well.

Re: Jerry Bates 1/6 Scale Helldiver Build...

Next step is to fit the ailerons and Flaps/Dive Brakes. In order to do this, I need to install the servos for each surface so that I know everything will line up and work.

I'm using MKS HV747s for the Flaps and Dive Brakes (one for each). For the Ailerons I'm using Savox SA-1256TGs.

For the Flaps/Dive Brakes - I've deviated from the plans and moved the servo mounting location so that the linkage is short and easy to install and maintain. This is the main reason for using the MKS HV747s - they are small, light and pack a punch.

Here is the roughed in Flaps/Dive Brakes servo bays.

I've installed the Aileron servos in the plan location using the Plywood Wing Servo Mounts.

With the locations of the 6 wing servos worked out - time to fit the Flaps/Dive Brakes and Ailerons.

    Rough fitting the Flaps

Re: Jerry Bates 1/6 Scale Helldiver Build...

At this point I realized that I have a problem. The fit between the Ailerons, Flaps/Dive Brakes, wing tip, and center section wing ribs is very tight. There is no room for error. Also, the location where each half of the Flaps/Dive Brakes join (between the center wing section and outer wing panels) isn't ideal. This location (outlined on the plans) is the scale location where the wing folded on the full size plane for carrier operations. The angle that the Flap/Dive Brake panels join together is very awkward. It really makes joining the wing together difficult. It also makes the outboard Flap/Dive Brake panels very flimsy. So....

After much thought - I decided to permanently join the wing panels to the center section (also permanently join the 2 Flap and Dive Brake panels together - and reinforce) to make this a one piece wing. If I had to do this over again, I would change the location where the Flap and Dive Brake panels split, keep the Flap and Dive Brake panels separate, and install a servo for each Flap and Dive Brake panel (For a total of 8 Flap/Dive Brake servos - instead of 4). I can't do this now without major surgery to what I already have done.

So this is now a one piece wing. Overall having a one piece wing will make the plane harder to transport, but I can make room in my trailer.
