My first "RC" plane would have been the cox P-19 control line, which you could order from the Sears "wish book" catalog. My Cousin also got one, but since he wasn't interested enough to get the necessary items to fly it, I was able to trade something to get his too. I flew them until they were too broken to fly anymore, so they are long gone. I remember doing a tare down of the 049 engine showing all the parts for a class demonstration, must have been grade 4 or 5.
After that it was only static models for me, got 2nd place in a local shop contest with a p-40. I wish my Mom didn't through them all out after I left home
7 years ago while in Saskatoon my uncle who's been involved with the club there for decades asked if I wanted to go flying....sure!
I guess that would have been my first real RC flight. Botched the landing a bit, but otherwise went well. That was when electric was just becoming popular, but I didn't go "check out the LHS" because I didn't think I lived in a good place to get into the hobby, & I had many other things keeping me busy.
This month marks 3 years since I brought home a little coax heli from "The Source"....& the bug hit me hard! Although I really liked the heli's the foam electric planes were cheap, so I got going on those. I bought a SIM & a micro Corsair. I also got the UMX Mosquito which flew much better than the little Corsair, so that's what I really got started with, & I still have it.
So 3 years & over $25G later here I am with a full fleet of heli's & good selection of planes, including a 30cc gas & new 50cc waiting on an engine.
So after building my confidence on the SIM & my little Mosquito, I flew all my "bigger" plane for the first time on the same day! lol It was one of my best days. The little Wildcat became my go-to plane for a while, & it hangs above my hobby desk. The Cessna I sold, & the Corsair (my favorite warbird) unfortunately went in hard last year when the cheap elevator servo went bad.
