I mainly fly 40-120 size airframes....My favorite size is the 60 and 90 size...easy to haul around and store. I had an RC Guys Ag Wagon but just found it to big to lug back and forth to the field, so made an executive decision to stay 120 size and under.

Used to be lots of nice relaxing type planes in the 60 size class but they seem to be dwindling.

My first nitro plane on its maiden did a spinner dip at full throttle the .61 was buried two feet in the ground and the twist was not even sawdust lol

Re: Your 1st RC Plane / Where is it now?

My first plane was a Great Planes Trainer 40. It was a shoulder wing trainer. It was about 1989. Instructor would not take it up because it had a symmetrical wing.

First plane I flew. Carl Goldberg eagle 63 with a FOX 40 engine. Bought it and Robin taught me to fly it at ron Oscars. On the fourth flight I was having so much fun I ran out of fuel. Gave the radio to Robin but He did not know where the plane was (my fault) and it crashed into the trees.
I bought some wood and covering from Ron and spent all night rebuilding it.
Got it done by 5 am. Had a coffee and thought to myself I can crash that plane better than an instructor so I should just fly here at the farm. Put plane and radio on charger.
Started up the push mower and went to dads alpha alpha field.
Cut a little 20' x 200' runway. (roughest field I ever flew off of)
Went and got plane at 9 am. Took off at 9:15. I was never was so pumped up. Got 8 solo flights in that day.
Batteries were too week to fly and landing gear was bent up from my runway but I had a grin from ear to ear.

I used that plane to try teach my dad and wife to fly. Dad crashed it once into the rock pile off the end of the runway.
Rebuilt it and it was hanging in my dads garage for years.
2 years ago the old rubber bands let go and it did a nose dive into the cement floor.. Let my kids play with the carnage until I threw it out last summer.

And so the Trout Farm Flyers were born....cool story Lorne!

I'm not sure how old you were, but I can't help but wonder how your dad felt about the loss of his field...and was there crop growing when you mowed???

I got a scolding. Dad said why did you cut the alpha alpha on the best growing area of the farm? I said it was close to power to charge planes. He wanted me to move the field so three weeks later after the hay was cut I started cutting a new runway at the present site. It was about 35 feet by 350 feet originally with hay bales on the end of the runway. The first winter I planted the skis of the eagle 63 into the top of the hay bale. I then took the tractor and moved dads hay stack and mowed down the fence while I was at it. Again dad was not happy but he always enjoyed watching me fly so he forgave me.
When my dad was dying a couple years ago I set a goal to learn to hover down low and rolling harrier before he died. I achieved my goal and he thought it was pretty neat.

Re: Your 1st RC Plane / Where is it now?

Painful memory re first plane - Goldberg Eagle 2 with OS 40LA. Flew the daylights out of it. Got my wings and moved on to other planes. Sold the Eagle 2 to an older gentleman who flew it one morning and left it in the back of his truck on a hot summer day with the wings on it, held on by rubber bands. That evening I was at the field and he fired it up and took off. Unfortunately leaving it all day in the truck with rubber bands on the wings was not a good idea. Watched him circle a couple of times when suddenly the wings let go and they tumbled nicely down, while the fuselage headed down into a bunch of trees like a lawn dart under power. Totally demolished except for the wings. Was hard to watch since I built the kit, but once you sell them you have no control over what the other guy does.

Bill glad to see you made over here. (Welcome).
I have no real stories about my first airframe. I do remember it, ha. A 12yr old seldom forgets fond memories like that. Helped mold me to who I am today.
