Re: The birth of Solstice (build thread)

It's not going quite as fast as the posts make it seem. I have been working on this for a month, just got around to posting it now.
I am at the least enjoyable part of the construction now: put filler on, sand it off, put more on, sand it off, put more on, sand it off... Will this ever end? The nose is about 3" shorter than planned. Broke it off while moving around and decided to leave it like that. I have to keep reminding myself that this is only a test model and not the final version. (must keep OCD in check)

Carved and smoothed the bottom. Pics don't show the number of hours involved.

Working on the rudder while primer or filler dries. This is the servo mount. Just making it up as I go, don't have plans for all the small details.

Posting is all caught up with construction so things will seem to go a lot slower now.

Very nice! I wish I had the time/patience/skill to build from scratch... Mostly the time though.

I got a cheap motor & fan assembly and it did not have any mounting tabs. Mounted the thing in a jig, covered it with saran wrap, then put 6 layers of glass. Ended up with a fan mount.

Remember that servo mount for the rudder? Here it is with servos mounted. Can you guess why 2 servos? The few people that know about this are not allowed to guess!

Nice work on the EDF mount Joe.

Im guessing the Rudder is Split so as to act as an airbrake? Sweet if so.

    First guess got it right!
Flaps on a canard are equivalent to down elevator. It would require a dramatic increase in canard pitch to compensate. The split rudder has a very high drag line causing pitch up. Also, the rudder hinge line is tilted back about 20* giving up elevator effect. Dropping flaps should balance the split rudder. This being a test model, will allow me to adjust mix between flaps and rudder split without risking the turbine.
