Forgot to mention, I have Hysol!!! Second wing skin is glued on.
I think balsa is too soft for the trailing edge of the ailerons, so I wanted to use basswood. Couldn't find basswood near by so decided to use poplar from Home Depot. As with so many things,...
Still waiting for Hysol. It's coming from Windsor to Hamilton, normally 2 or 3 days. There appears to be a problem in the Stoney Creek postal facility. Tracking shows the trip to Stoney Creek in...
Twice now, Canada Post has changed the expected delivery date for my Hysol. I still have lots to do while I wait. Made up four aileron horns from G10 and installed.
Got one skin on a wing and ran out of hysol.:( So, while I wait for my glue order to come in, I made the fuel tank.
Pic#1 - got a thin layer of glass on the plug.
Pic 2 & 3 - Tank halves removed...
Started assembling the ailerons. Made a plug for the fuel tank from foam. It will be 3.6 liter for lots of flight time.
Many hours put in and showing some progress. Wings are framed up. Landing gear mounts complete. Leading edge 'D' tube is covered with 1.5mm Soric skinned with 1.4oz cloth. Now preparing the...
Did you tint the epoxy? What pigment did you use? The result is amazing!
Lots of room for landing gear in the new wings!
For wood to wood joints, I am trying this new epoxy. I like it.
Thanks Peter. I am really excited about this because of how well the foam prototype worked. Five flights on it now and still loving it.
Wing structure is completely dry fit. I just have to align the trailing edge and go at it with hysol.
I feel like I've walked 5 miles from back and forth from one side of the table to the other. Have to get all the measurements correct before applying glue.
Bought 2 more sheets of Divinycell and fiberglass cloth. Now I have enough Divinycell covered with fiberglass to complete all the ribs. Cutting and gluing ribs now.
Winter is ahead and it's nice to see what other people are building. Go for it!
Just cut the 4 parts of W1 and got them glued together. Looking at the picture above, I realize I forgot to put the holes in for the carbon tubes. Just have to redo the nc files to include the...
3rd day on the computer making rib patterns.
Here is Solstice-X3. This is 40" wingspan almost completely built from Dollar Store material: foam board, duct tape, and epoxy.
It flew great!
Need to adjust the mix between split rudder and...
Picture of the original plan form and the new design. More room for landing gear and quite a bit more wing area.
Scratch building goes two steps forward and one step back, usually. This time I took about ten steps back. Trying to fit the landing gear ran into severe interference problems. After a lot of...
Some progress: Top of wings sheeted. Assembly is turned over to work on everything in the wings. Aileron servos mounted. Waiting for landing gear struts on order so I can get the main gear mounted.
Slowly moving along. Top sheeting is on the inboard panels and working on the outer parts.
Have you ever had to glue something in an awkward place with no way to clamp it?
I have a few of these super magnets for that. Here they are holding a ply doubler on the root rib for a wing bolt...
I wanted to buy 1/16" Divinycell for wing sheeting but only available if I buy a case of 4' X 8' sheets. Not going to happen! Ribs are cut for 1/16" sheeting so 1/8" sheet I have is too thick. ...
CNC router is cheaper than a mid-size turbine... https://www.robotshop.com/ca/en/carbide3d-shapeoko-3-robust-cnc-router-kit-us.html
Using 1/8" Divinycell covered both sides with 1.4 oz cloth and epoxy. Putting the CNC cutter to use making ribs.
